Academics
NHCS is committed to using curriculum that teaches through the lens of a biblical worldview and a strong academic foundation which meets or exceeds California state standards. Elementary students start each day with pledges to the American and Christian flags and prayer. Students participate in worship through music and sound Bible teaching in a weekly chapel as well as a daily grade level Bible curriculum. All curriculum is chosen to guide our students to achieve our Student Learning Outcomes. Our core subjects include Bible, language arts (reading, grammar, spelling, and writing), handwriting, math, science, and social studies. At the elementary level we have chosen Christian publishers such as Abeka, Bob Jones University Press, Positive Action, and Purposeful Design. Since we believe that education is more than just academics, our students experience instruction in music, physical education, technology, and make regular visits to the library. Chromebooks are also available for classroom use.
Students receive awards at the end of each semester for academic achievement as well as excellence in character. In May, the Presidential Award for Academic Excellence is presented to 5th grade students who distinguish themselves by meeting the criteria for high achievement based on report card GPA and accomplishment on end of year testing.
Elementary students are taught by qualified teachers who love children and desire to serve God through instruction. Please see our Scope and Sequence links below for more information about content by grade level.
The elementary (K-5th) school day is from 8:30 AM - 3 PM on Mon/Tues/Thurs/Fri. Wednesday is a modified day beginning at 8:30 AM with chapel and with dismissal at 1:40 PM. This allows our teachers to engage in professional development on Wednesday afternoons.
